La Cala de Mijas

Costa del Sol

La Cala de Mijas is one of the original fishing villages located on the Costa del Sol, in the province of Malaga. A charming village with a renovated Moorish tower, a pleasant village atmosphere and lots of appeal.
La Cala de Mijas is a very popular seaside town with many good restaurants, shops, pharmacy and ‘chiringuitos’ (beach bars), located between Fuengirola and Marbella, close to the popular urbanization of Calahonda and Malaga International Airport is just a 20 minute drive away.
It is very quiet, not completely overloaded with tourists, but you will find everything you need, a beautiful golden sandy beach and not far away are larger cities like malaga with a little more action.

Climate In La Cala de Mijas it is a subtropical Mediterranean climate: hot summers and warm winters. The average temperature in summer is around 32 º C, but the cool breeze from the sea makes this bearable.

Eating Out
La Cala de Mijas may be small, but there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. From typical Spanish ‘Menu del Dia’ restaurants, fish restaurants, Indian, British, Thai to a good old Irish pub. So choice of abundance, and are you still not satisfied? Then get in the car and drive to Fuengirola where the choice is even greater.

In La Cala de Mijas you will find a wide range of different (international) eateries. One of our favorites is “El Cortijillo”. A typical Spanish restaurant with pure dishes and tapas, pleasant service and all that at a fair price. Don’t miss the homemade Gazpacho!

A real hidden jewel is “The Geranium“ and “Figaro”. This fine dining restaurant, with only a limited number of tables, has an à la carte menu but also a delicious degustation menu with adapted wines. All based on local products.

Torre de la Batería de Cala del Moral

History and La Torre de la Batería
Historically it has been a place of defence, fortified with four towers along the coast Mediterranean coast of Andalusia, whose function was to give notice of the presence of enemy ships to the garrisons of Fuengirola, Benalmádena and Marbella.
The towers are:

  • Battery Torre La Cala del Moral (16th century)
  • Torre de Calahonda (from the 16th century)
  • New Tower of La Cala del Moral (probably the most modern tower along the coast, 19th century)
  • Calaburras Tower (built around 1515 in the Punta de Calaburras)

Known previously as “La Cala del Moral” (English: the Bay of Mulberries) due to the mulberry trees growing in the area, the name was changed in the 1970s to La Cala de Mijas in order to avoid confusion with the similarly named Cala del Moral just outside Málaga.
La Torre de la Batería, a watchtower built in the sixteenth century, is located in the center of La Cala de Mijas. The tower has a height of ten meters and from the top it has a breathtaking view over the sea and the village. Today it houses the Study Center of the watchtowers and the local tourist office.

Furthermore, the village has a beautifully landscaped path that runs along the coastline all the way to Calahonda.
